Josh Cavallo, the gay footballer who made headlines when he came out nearly four years ago, is moving to the UK with his fiancé. He is now searching for a new team to sign for.
The 25-year-old left-back left Adelaide United after his contract ended and confirmed he wants to play in Britain. The UK football market is very competitive, with many players trying to earn contracts each summer.
Another openly gay player, striker Jake Daniels, is also looking for a club after being released by Blackpool. Daniels was the first British male player to come out since the 1990s.
Cavallo might have better chances in Scotland, where many Australian players currently play in the top league. He hasn’t played for the Australian national team yet but has made over 50 appearances in the A-League.
He has not played a senior game since February 2024 due to a serious muscle injury, which followed an Achilles injury the year before. Although he had a good pre-season in 2024, he was left out of Adelaide United’s team all season with little explanation.

Recent reports suggest there were issues behind the scenes at Adelaide, with claims that some staff were not supportive. Cavallo said the situation “broke my heart and also my career as a footballer.”
Now, he is focusing on finding a new club that will believe in him both as a player and as a role model for LGBTQ athletes.
On Instagram, he shared that moving to the UK is a fresh start and thanked the LGBTQ+ community for their support, saying they helped him never give up.
