Tottenham Hotspur continued their strong start to the 2025/26 Premier League season with a 2-0 win over Manchester City, ending a run of six away league games without a victory.
Both teams had started the new campaign well, Spurs beat Burnley 3-0, while City thrashed Wolves 4-0. Playing at home, City were favourites, but Tottenham’s good recent record at the Etihad showed they could cause problems. And they did just that, especially in the first half.
After a fast start, City looked in control, with Omar Marmoush having a few chances — one just wide and two well saved by Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. But Spurs, now managed by Thomas Frank, were happy to sit back and hit on the break. That plan worked when Mohamed Kudus flicked a header to Richarlison, who set up Brennan Johnson to calmly score the first goal.
Not long after, it was 2-0, and this time, City were to blame. Under pressure from Tottenham’s attackers, City keeper James Trafford played a risky short pass. Richarlison intercepted, and João Palhinha smashed in his first goal for the club.
Spurs kept the same game plan in the second half. They didn’t create much more, but neither did City. Tottenham stayed solid at the back and didn’t allow City many clear chances.
In the final minutes, City had more of the ball, but couldn’t break Spurs down. It was a surprisingly easy win for the visitors, who now have six points from two games and haven’t conceded yet. City, on the other hand, looked off the pace and were punished by a team that has become one of Pep Guardiola’s toughest opponents, he has now lost 10 matches to Spurs, more than against any other side.
