Nketiah’s late winner stuns Liverpool

Crystal Palace ended Liverpool’s perfect start to the season in dramatic fashion, with Eddie Nketiah scoring a 97th-minute winner at Selhurst Park. The victory means Palace are now unbeaten in a club-record 18 matches across all competitions.

Liverpool saw more of the ball in the first half, but Palace were more dangerous in attack. They took the lead in the 9th minute when Ryan Gravenberch tried to clear a corner but only sent the ball to Ismaïla Sarr, who scored from close range. Palace could have extended their lead through Yeremy Pino and Jean-Philippe Mateta, but both were denied by goalkeeper Alisson.

Alexander Isak, making his first league start of the season for Liverpool, missed a good chance after going around the keeper but shooting from a tight angle. Liverpool’s best opportunity before half-time came when Ibrahima Konaté headed just wide from a corner. Palace almost made it 2-0 when Mateta’s shot hit the inside of the post just before the break.

Liverpool kept the pressure up in the second half. Substitute Cody Gakpo nearly scored straight away, while Florian Wirtz and Isak both had chances but couldn’t find the net. Palace still looked dangerous on the counter, but most of the chances fell to Liverpool.

Eventually, Liverpool equalised when Federico Chiesa scored from close range. The goal stood after a VAR check for a possible handball by Mohamed Salah in the build-up.

Just when it looked like the game would end in a draw, Nketiah scored in the seventh minute of injury time, giving Palace their second win against Liverpool this season. The result moves Palace up to second place in the league, just three points behind the Reds, who suffered their first defeat in 90 minutes this season.
