Manchester City extended their strong record against Burnley with a comfortable 5-1 win at the Etihad Stadium, making it 14 wins in a row over the Clarets in all competitions.
City didn’t start quickly but took the lead after 15 minutes with help from Burnley defender Maxime Estève, who accidentally scored an own goal after Jérémy Doku’s shot was saved.
Burnley stayed in the game and got level just before half-time. Jaidon Anthony scored after City lost the ball high up the pitch, giving Burnley hope going into the break.
In the second half, Burnley had a few chances to take the lead, with Lyle Foster and Quilindschy Hartman both going close. But they couldn’t make it count.
City made them pay when Matheus Nunes reacted first to a loose ball in the box and smashed it in to make it 2-1. Soon after, Estève scored another own goal, this time from a Nunes cross, and City were in full control.
Erling Haaland added two late goals to wrap up the win and take his tally for the season higher.
The win was a boost for Pep Guardiola’s team, who have now won 23 of their last 25 Premier League games against newly promoted teams.
