Manchester City face Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season. Both teams have had a mixed start, and this derby could be a turning point.
City come into the match after two straight defeats. It’s the first time since 2004/05 they’ve lost two of their first three league games. With just three points so far, it’s Pep Guardiola’s worst start to a league campaign. If they lose again, it would be the first time they’ve lost three of their opening four Premier League matches since 1995/96, when they were relegated. City have had several injuries, especially in defence, but they’ve still been strong at home, winning five in a row at the Etihad before their recent loss to Tottenham.
United haven’t been convincing either, but they currently sit above City in the table. After a shock defeat to Grimsby in the cup, they narrowly beat Burnley thanks to a stoppage-time penalty. That was only their eighth league win in 30 matches under Ruben Amorim, and four of those wins came against newly promoted sides.
In recent meetings, Manchester City have won five of the last eight league derbies, but home teams don’t have a great record in this fixture, only six of the last 20 league matches between the two have been won by the hosts. United are unbeaten in their last four matches against City in all competitions, with two wins and two draws.
Both teams are dealing with injuries. City may be without six defenders, including John Stones, and will also miss Omar Marmoush. United will be without Matheus Cunha, Diogo Dalot and Mason Mount. Young forward Oscar Bobb could feature for City, while Bruno Fernandes has been key in past derbies, scoring in each of United’s last three league wins against City.
With both sides needing a win and looking shaky at the back, this derby could be full of chances and drama.
