Manchester City moved to within two points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League after a 2-1 win against Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium. Newcastle have now lost their last 17 league matches away to City.
Newcastle came into the match after a big win in Europe, but they looked tired after their long trip. City started strongly and took the lead when Omar Marmoush set up Nico O’Reilly, who chose to shoot from outside the box instead of passing to Erling Haaland and scored into the bottom corner.
Newcastle responded well and equalised eight minutes later. After a corner, Lewis Hall hit a shot from the edge of the area which took a deflection and beat Gianluigi Donnarumma.
However, the visitors were level for only five minutes. Haaland crossed from the right and O’Reilly headed the ball across goal and into the net to restore City’s lead.
Newcastle nearly equalised before half-time, but Dan Burn’s header was ruled out for offside. In the second half, City defended well and limited Newcastle to long-range efforts. Nick Pope made some important saves late on, but Newcastle could not find another goal.
The win puts pressure on Arsenal ahead of their match against Tottenham, while Newcastle must beat Everton in their next game to keep their hopes of European football alive.
