Manchester City aim to keep title hopes alive at Anfield

Liverpool and Manchester City meet at Anfield on Sunday evening in a Premier League clash that usually carries title-defining weight, but which arrives this season under very different circumstances for both sides. The defending champions Liverpool find themselves chasing a top-four finish rather than setting the pace, while City’s own title ambitions have taken a hit after a series of frustrating league results.

Arne Slot’s side appear to have steadied themselves after a difficult spell, finishing January in emphatic fashion with a 6–0 European win over Qarabağ before coming from behind to dismantle Newcastle 4–1 in the league. That result snapped a five-game winless run in the Premier League and kept Liverpool within touching distance of the Champions League places. Anfield has once again proved a stronghold, with the Reds unbeaten in eight home matches across all competitions, a run built on attacking confidence and a growing sense of control in big moments.

Manchester City also arrive off the back of a morale-boosting midweek victory, beating Newcastle 3–1 to book a place in the Carabao Cup final. However, Pep Guardiola’s side have struggled to translate performances into league wins, failing to win five of their last six Premier League outings. Dropping points after surrendering a two-goal lead against Tottenham proved particularly costly, leaving City six points adrift of leaders Arsenal. Even so, City tend to rise to the occasion in marquee fixtures, with an impressive recent record away to reigning champions suggesting they will relish the challenge.

The visitors won the reverse fixture 3–0 earlier in the season and could complete a rare league double over Liverpool, something they have not achieved since the 1930s. History at Anfield, however, strongly favours the hosts, with City managing just two wins there in their last 38 league visits. Recent meetings between the sides have often produced goals, and with both teams boasting strong attacking profiles but occasional defensive vulnerabilities, another open contest could be on the cards.

Liverpool’s attacking hopes may once again rest on Hugo Ekitike, who has been in prolific form since December, particularly on home soil. City will look to impose themselves early, as they have been the league’s strongest first-half side this season, although their second-half output has surprisingly lagged behind. With both teams under pressure to keep pace near the top of the table, Sunday’s showdown promises intensity, quality and a reminder that even in transitional seasons, clashes between Liverpool and Manchester City rarely disappoint.
