Liverpool ended 2025 on a high, beating Wolves 2-1 at Anfield in the Premier League. The win extended Liverpool’s excellent record against Wolves, with 17 wins from their last 18 league meetings.
Before kick-off, there was an emotional moment as Diogo Jota’s children walked out with Virgil van Dijk, while Jota’s wife watched from the sideline.
Liverpool started strongly and could have scored early, but Hugo Ekitike’s shot hit the post after a brilliant pass from Florian Wirtz. Wolves’ first chance came a little later when 18-year-old Mateus Mané, making his first Premier League start, was denied by goalkeeper Alisson.
Liverpool kept pressing and were rewarded just before half-time. Ryan Gravenberch scored after Jeremy Frimpong’s cross, and a minute later Florian Wirtz scored his first Premier League goal after a clever pass from Ekitike, making it 2-0.
Wolves pulled a goal back six minutes into the second half through Santiago Bueno after a rebound from Tolu Arokodare’s header. They tried to find an equaliser, but Liverpool defended well, and Wolves couldn’t score again.
Liverpool held on for the win, marking their 18th victory in the last 21 top-flight matches between Christmas and New Year. Wolves remain without a win in their last 22 Premier League games.
