Sunderland extended their unbeaten home run in the league to nine matches after drawing 1-1 with Leeds United. It was the first draw between the two sides in 11 Premier League meetings.
The match started slowly, with very few chances. Leeds defender Joe Rodon was fouled twice early on, but no free-kicks were given. He stayed on despite being injured, and that proved costly. Rodon failed to close down Simon Adingra, who scored for Sunderland in the 28th minute after a clever pass from Granit Xhaka.
Rodon was taken off soon after. Leeds improved slightly and created chances from set pieces. Just before half-time, Brenden Aaronson went close, but his shot was cleared off the line by Trai Hume.
Leeds equalised just three minutes into the second half. A quick counter-attack caught Sunderland out, and Aaronson set up Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who scored to continue his fine run of form.
Leeds controlled most of the second half but could not find a winning goal. Jayden Bogle missed a good chance when he shot wide.
In the end, Leeds had to settle for a draw, which still keeps them seven points clear of the relegation zone. Sunderland remain in the race for European places but will feel they missed a good chance to win.
