Aston Villa edged out Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in a thrilling FA Cup fourth-round encounter at Villa Park, marking the first time since 2015 that Villa have reached the last 16. Early goals and late drama set the tone for a match filled with intensity, key saves, and moments of brilliance on both ends.
The game exploded into life within the first minute as Jacob Ramsey fired Villa ahead after just 58 seconds. Spurs’ young keeper Antonin Kinsky was at fault for the goal, misjudging a shot from the left-footed Ramsey after a dazzling run and pass from Morgan Rogers through the heart of Tottenham’s midfield. Kinsky, diving to his left, fumbled the ball over his own right hip and into the net.
Spurs were visibly rattled, struggling to maintain possession, as Villa’s relentless pressing caused further mistakes in midfield. Leon Bailey and Donyell Malen consistently caused problems for the Spurs defence, with Malen nearly doubling Villa’s lead in the 14th minute after intercepting a poor clearance from Kinsky, only to fire over the bar under pressure.
In the 29th minute, Kinsky redeemed himself with a brilliant save to deny Bailey, whose shot from the edge of the box was heading for the bottom corner. Ramsey came close again moments later, hitting the post after pouncing on the rebound. Villa continued to dominate, exposing gaps in Spurs’ midfield as players like Youri Tielemans and Rogers repeatedly broke through the lines.
Tottenham’s only major chance of the half came in the 24th minute when Mikey Moore slid a perfect pass to Son Heung-min, but the forward shot straight at Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. It was a missed opportunity that highlighted the ongoing struggles of an out-of-form Son.
Villa picked up where they left off after the break, with Martinez making an early intervention to deny Son from close range in the 51st minute. However, it was Villa who struck the decisive second goal in the 64th minute. Rogers, who had been superb all match, scored from close range following a dangerous low cross by Malen. The ball deflected off Pedro Porro, who was already falling, leaving Rogers to finish emphatically.
Spurs, despite their injury woes and poor form, showed resilience in the latter stages. Ange Postecoglou’s side found renewed energy and began to push forward with intent. In the 78th minute, Danso missed a close-range chance after a deflected cross, and Pedro Porro forced a save from Martinez shortly after.
With five minutes of added time announced, Spurs finally got their breakthrough. In the 91st minute, Mathys Tel scored his first goal for the club with a spectacular volley from a deep cross by Dejan Kulusevski. Tel’s technique was superb—both feet off the ground, he flicked the ball across Martinez with the outside of his right foot, bringing the game back to life.
Spurs threw everything forward in the dying moments, including a last-ditch free kick from Son that was easily caught by Martinez. Villa’s defence, marshalled by Bogarde and Digne, held firm under pressure to secure a hard-fought victory.
