Ekkelenkamp's strike denies leaders Napoli crucial win over Udinese

Napoli were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Udinese at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, as the Serie A leaders missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table. Scott McTominay gave the hosts the lead in the first half, but Udinese responded swiftly through Jurgen Ekkelenkamp to earn a valuable point and leave Napoli with just a four-point cushion over Inter.

Antonio Conte’s side, coming off a draw against Roma, started the evening eager to reassert their dominance. Missing key players like Olivera and Spinazzola, Conte deployed Pasquale Mazzocchi at left-back and retained Juan Jesus at centre-back alongside Di Lorenzo. Up front, Romelu Lukaku, David Neres, and Matteo Politano led the line, while McTominay, Anguissa, and Lobotka anchored the midfield.

However, it was Udinese who showed early intent. Florian Thauvin’s powerful strike forced an impressive save from Alex Meret, setting the tone for a competitive half. Napoli responded with waves of pressure, and McTominay came close with a header that was brilliantly saved by Udinese’s keeper Sava. Politano also tested the keeper with a stinging left-footed strike before Di Lorenzo saw his shot blocked by Karlstrom.

Despite Napoli’s high press, Udinese remained dangerous on the counter. A clever pass from Thauvin nearly set up Lorenzo Lucca, whose effort narrowly missed the target. The Maradona Stadium held its breath as Meret denied Ekkelenkamp following another quick counter-attack.

Napoli’s breakthrough finally arrived in the 37th minute. McTominay, who had missed a clear chance moments earlier, made no mistake this time as he headed home from a corner, giving Napoli the lead.

But Udinese struck back almost immediately. Just three minutes later, a defensive error involving Juan Jesus and Mazzocchi allowed the ball to fall to Ekkelenkamp, who drilled a precise shot past Meret to level the score. The first half ended 1-1, with both sides creating chances but unable to capitalise further.

The second half resumed with no changes in personnel, but both teams picked up where they left off—pressing hard and creating opportunities. Udinese’s Lovric tested Meret early on with a long-range strike, while Napoli looked to Lukaku and Neres to break down Udinese’s compact defence. Solet made a vital tackle to deny Lukaku a clear chance, while Meret commanded his area well to cut off a dangerous Udinese corner.

Napoli, controlling possession but struggling to find space, saw several efforts blocked or off-target. McTominay’s strike from outside the box went wide, while Lukaku and Anguissa both had chances that were denied by Udinese’s resolute defending.

With frustration mounting, Conte opted for an attacking reshuffle, introducing Ngonge, Raspadori, and Simeone as part of a 4-2-4 formation. Udinese, meanwhile, brought on Payero to strengthen their midfield. Despite the increased attacking intent, Napoli struggled to create clear-cut chances, as Udinese defended deep and countered effectively.

In the final minutes, Lucca nearly capitalised on a counter-attack but was unable to beat Meret, while Di Lorenzo did well to intercept a dangerous cross from Udinese’s Kristensen. Despite sustained late pressure from Napoli, Udinese remained composed, running down the clock and securing the draw.

The result means Napoli have now drawn back-to-back Serie A matches, slowing their momentum in the title race. Speaking after the match, Conte admitted his side lacked the creativity needed to break down Udinese’s defensive structure. “We dominated possession but failed to find the decisive moment. This is something we need to address moving forward,” Conte said.

Udinese manager Kosta Runjaic praised his team’s resilience and organisation. “We knew Napoli would come at us with everything, but the players showed heart and discipline to earn this point.”

Napoli will be keen to rediscover their winning touch as they face a crucial run of fixtures in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Udinese’s spirited performance gives them a confidence boost as they continue their fight to climb up the Serie A table.
