Diogo Jota crash: Witnesses challenge speeding claims

The grief over the death of Diogo Jota remains intense as Spanish authorities continue to investigate the accident that claimed his life and that of his brother, who was travelling with him. According to police reports, the crash may have been caused by excessive speed in the Lamborghini Huracán they were driving, allegedly above the 120 km/h limit, and the sudden bursting of a tire, which caused the vehicle to veer off the road. Investigations are still ongoing, particularly into the cause of the tire explosion. However, the speed at which the car was travelling is at the center of growing controversy.

The initial findings from the Guardia Civil, based on technical inspections and forensic work, are now being firmly challenged by two eyewitnesses who were at the scene. One of them is José Azevedo, a truck driver who filmed the now widely circulated video showing the car engulfed in flames at the side of the road.

“I have a clear conscience,” Azevedo said in a video shared on social media. “I know what I saw. They passed by me calmly, with no signs of speeding. No speeding at all. I personally sent the video to CMTV because I started hearing nonsense being reported.”

Addressing the victims’ families, Azevedo added: “I give you my word — they were not driving fast. They were very calm. I drive that road every day, Monday to Saturday. I know it well. It’s a terrible road, poorly maintained and dark. I could clearly see the make and color of the car. A little further ahead, sadly, the tragedy occurred.”

This account has been supported by another truck driver, José Aleixo Duarte, who spoke to the Portuguese press and confirmed he witnessed and recorded the incident. Duarte also attempted to extinguish the fire but sadly realised there was no chance of saving the two occupants inside.
