Birkirkara FC will welcome Moldovan side Petrocub Hîncești to the Centenary Stadium tonight at 8:00pm in a highly anticipated UEFA Europa Conference League first qualifying round encounter. Playing the first leg at home, the Maltese side will be looking to gain a crucial advantage before the return leg.
Petrocub Hîncești, commonly known as Petrocub, are a growing force in Moldovan football. Founded in 1994, the club adopted its current name in 2015 and has since made consistent progress. In the 2023/24 season, they achieved a historic milestone by clinching their first-ever Moldovan Super Liga title — a victory that firmly placed them on the European football map.
Their domestic success also includes two Moldovan Cup wins in 2019/20 and 2023/24. They concluded the second phase of the league in fourth place, just seven points behind champions Milsami Orhei, and only one point behind Sheriff Tiraspol and Zimbru Chisinau.
Petrocub made their European debut in 2018, though they were eliminated in the first qualifying round by Croatian side Osijek. Since then, however, they have become regular participants in European competitions. In 2021, they reached the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League, and in 2022, they progressed to the third round — eliminating Floriana of Malta with a 1–0 aggregate victory.
Last season, Petrocub began their campaign in the UEFA Champions League, knocking out Kazakhstan’s Ordabasy before falling to Cyprus’ APOEL. Their subsequent participation in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League saw them reach the group stage of the latter, where they finished 36th overall with two points from six matches.
After a competitive season in the Malta Premier League, Birkirkara are eager to make a stronger impression in Europe this time around. To boost their squad, the club made several key signings: Argentine midfielder Marcos Maydana (29), who offers versatility across midfield; Ghanaian playmaker Geoffrey Acheampong (28), formerly with Sliema Wanderers; Spanish goalkeeper Miguel Ángel Martínez, a product of Real Madrid’s famed academy La Fábrica; and Brazilian attacker Lucas Ribeiro de Oliveira, known as Macula, previously with Gżira United. This week they also secured the signing of towering defender Stefan Marjanović from Serbia.
While Petrocub bring greater European experience, Birkirkara have the potential to surprise, especially with strong home support and disciplined tactical play. A tightly contested match is expected, where any mistake could prove decisive. The Stripes will likely aim to control the midfield and rely on their new arrivals to create scoring opportunities.
