Manchester City reach Carabao Cup Final after win over Newcastle

Manchester City secured their place in the Carabao Cup final with a 3-1 victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad Stadium, completing a 5-1 aggregate win in the semi final. The result also extended City’s home winning run against Newcastle to twelve consecutive matches.

City added to their first leg advantage early in the contest, opening the scoring after seven minutes. Omar Marmoush exchanged passes on the edge of the area before breaking into the box, where a challenge from Dan Burn saw the ball loop into the net beyond Aaron Ramsdale.

Newcastle attempted to respond and were denied by James Trafford, who produced a well timed save to stop Joe Willock. City soon regained control, with Tijjani Reijnders seeing his effort tipped wide before Malick Thiaw deflected a Rayan Aït Nouri attempt behind for a corner.

The visitors continued to press but were again thwarted by Trafford, who rushed off his line to deny Anthony Gordon. At the other end, City doubled their lead after Kieran Trippier failed to clear, allowing Marmoush to head in from close range following a looping ball into the area.

City struck again just three minutes later. Burn was again unfortunate as his challenge diverted the ball into the path of Reijnders, who finished calmly to make it 3-0 on the night. Newcastle suffered another setback before the break as Gordon was forced off through injury, while Trafford produced another save to deny Sven Botman.

Newcastle made a triple substitution at the interval, and Yoane Wissa had an immediate opportunity but shot wide after being played through by Sandro Tonali. Reijnders went close again for City after being set up by Marmoush, before Newcastle pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute. Anthony Elanga drove into the box and curled his shot in off the post.

Harvey Barnes later found the net but saw his effort ruled out for offside in the build up, while Elanga missed a clear chance soon after. Marmoush fired over with a potential hat trick opportunity, and Ramsdale prevented further goals by saving late efforts from Erling Haaland.

Despite the late pressure, City comfortably saw out the tie to reach their first Carabao Cup final since 2021, where they will face Arsenal. Newcastle, meanwhile, recorded a third defeat in their last four matches in all competitions.
