Sheffield Wednesday have been officially charged by the English Football League (EFL) for breaking the rules after failing to pay their players’ wages on time.
The Championship club has had financial troubles before, they’ve been banned from registering new players in recent seasons and were docked six points in the 2020/21 season for breaking spending rules.
The EFL said that the club’s owner, Dejphon Chansiri, is also being charged. Although he promised to cover the club’s financial needs, he’s now accused of letting the club miss wage payments in both March and May 2025.
Chansiri, a Thai businessman who has owned the club since 2015, has accepted responsibility and apologised to the club’s fans and staff. The club says they are working hard to pay the outstanding wages for May as soon as possible.
Both Chansiri and Sheffield Wednesday now have 14 days to reply to the EFL’s charges.
The club ended the season in 12th place in the Championship.
