Sheffield United break Playoff curse with commanding Semi-Final victory

For a team with a long and painful history in the EFL playoffs, Sheffield United showed no signs of nerves as they cruised past Bristol City to book a place in the Championship playoff final at Wembley. The two-legged semi-final was one-sided from start to finish, with the Blades winning both matches 3-0 to seal a comprehensive 6-0 aggregate victory.

Historically, the playoffs have been unforgiving for Sheffield United. Nine previous appearances have ended in five semi-final exits and four final heartbreaks. But manager Chris Wilder’s side, having narrowly missed out on automatic promotion, regrouped and hit their stride at just the right time.

Their dominance was evident throughout both legs. Goals from Kieffer Moore, Gustavo Hamer, and substitute Callum O’Hare in the second leg put the result beyond doubt and reflected the massive 22-point gap between third-placed United and sixth-placed Bristol City—the largest disparity between playoff teams in Championship history.

Wilder, who guided his team back from off-field turmoil earlier in the season, praised his squad’s professionalism. “Nights like this are special. It’s been a tough campaign, but this performance was for our fans,” he said. “Getting through that first 25 minutes settled us, and from there, we played our game.”

Bristol City, under Liam Manning, didn’t go down without a fight. The Robins started brightly and created chances early on, but their failure to find the net allowed United to settle. When Moore opened the scoring just before half-time, the momentum swung decisively.

After the break, Hamer doubled the lead with a deflected strike from a well-worked set-piece, before O’Hare sealed the deal late on. Wilder even had the luxury of resting key players ahead of the Wembley final.

Despite Bristol City’s best efforts and admirable approach, there was no miracle comeback akin to the one their neighbours Sheffield Wednesday produced in 2023. “I’m proud of the way we played,” said Manning. “We stayed true to our style, and the players gave everything.”

Sheffield United’s last win at Wembley came in the 1925 FA Cup final—a century ago. After such commanding playoff displays, Wilder’s side now stands just one win away from ending that long drought and making a Premier League return.
