Bruno Fernandes has said he rejected a big-money offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal because he wants to stay at Manchester United and continue playing at the highest level.
Speaking at Portugal’s training camp before their Nations League semi-final against Germany, Fernandes confirmed Al Hilal made him a tempting offer. Reports say the Saudi club were ready to pay United up to £100 million for the 30-year-old.
Fernandes explained that the president of Al Hilal called him and asked if he wanted to join, giving him time to think about his future. He then spoke to United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, who asked him to stay. Fernandes added that United were open to letting him go if he really wanted to, but they didn’t need the money.
Although he admitted that it would have been an easy move, especially with other Portuguese stars like Ronaldo and Cancelo already in Saudi Arabia, Fernandes said he wants to keep competing in top tournaments and doing what he loves most: playing football at the highest level.
Despite United having a poor season, finishing 15th in the league and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham, Fernandes stood out, scoring 19 goals and making 19 assists.
Former United captain Gary Neville said it was a big moment, praising Fernandes for staying loyal during tough times. “He’s been United’s most important player for years. Turning down that kind of money shows real character,” Neville said.
Manchester United are now expected to bring in new players as Amorim reshapes the squad. They’ve already signed Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha and are linked with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. Players like Sancho, Rashford, Antony, and Garnacho might leave.
Fernandes, who joined United in 2020 for £47 million from Sporting Lisbon, has made 290 appearances and scored 98 goals so far.
