The Maltese youth national teams competing in the Under-15 and Under-23 categories have begun their 2025 Nations Cup commitments in Bridlington with a series of intense matches, returning a mixture of promising victories and narrow defeats.
In the Under-15 doubles category, Malta delivered a strong showing. The pair of Denzel Falzon and Nick Muscat recorded a convincing 3-0 win over the English duo Lukas Williams and Olly Watson. Jake Castaldi and Dielyn Edward followed suit with an impressive 3-1 victory against Jude Halfpenny and Rory Rees, also of England.
The Maltese U15 team continued to impress in team play, securing a dominant 11-4 win over England A and a 10-5 victory against Wales. However, earlier setbacks included a 9-6 loss to Northern Ireland and a hard-fought 8-7 defeat to Scotland, in a match where Malta were unfortunate not to claim the points.
In the Under-23 category, the Maltese side faced tough competition from Scottish opponents. They narrowly lost 14-11 to Scotland B1, 15-10 to Scotland A, and were edged out 13-12 by Scotland B in a match that went down to the wire.
The Maltese youth teams were back in action today with a packed schedule. In the Under-23 fixture held at 9:00, Malta A faced England B but fell short with a final score of 10-15. In the Under-15 matches, Malta suffered a 6-9 defeat against Northern Ireland A in their 10:30 fixture.
Later in the day, Malta took on England A at 14:00 in another tightly contested match, losing narrowly 7-8. Two evening fixtures followed at 19:00, with the Maltese Under-15s playing against Scotland A and Wales. Results for these final matches are expected to be announced shortly.
Despite some setbacks, the Maltese contingent has shown strong potential and resilience, particularly in the Under-15 category, where individual performances and team chemistry have stood out. The competition continues to provide invaluable international experience for the young athletes representing Malta on the European stage.
Further updates and final standings will be reported as the tournament progresses.
