The Malta Champion competition, one of the top events organised by the Malta Blackball Federation, has now reached an important stage as eight players have made it through to the quarter-finals.
Yesterday, Glenn Axiaq, Gary Carr, Stephen Mangion, Clint Azzopardi, Clayton Castaldi, Conrad Catania, Miguel Amato, and defending champion Johan Attard all secured their places in the last eight after strong performances.
Johan Attard, the current title holder, had a convincing 7–2 win over Kerstin Vella, taking control of the match from the very beginning. Miguel Amato and Clint Azzopardi both won 7–3, beating Mevrick Zammit and Wayne Pace. Stephen Mangion impressed with a 7–0 victory against Antoine Schembri.
Other matches were much closer. Conrad Catania narrowly beat Miguel Mizzi 7–5, and Glenn Axiaq also won 7–5 in a tight game against Dielyn Edwards. Gary Carr had to fight hard in his match but came through with a 7–6 win over Lee Grima.
The quarter-final matches will be played today:
7:30 PM – Glenn Axiaq vs Clayton Castaldi
7:30 PM – Gary Carr vs Conrad Catania
8:15 PM – Stephen Mangion vs Miguel Amato
8:15 PM – Clint Azzopardi vs Johan Attard
The final will take place on Tuesday, 20 October at 8:30 PM.
