The Cleveland Cavaliers’ wing center, Lauri Markkanen is on the list for the Finnish Defensive Sports School, which means that the NBA player would have to serve his military service.
In essence, men in Finland must pass military service by the age of 28. Professional athletes go to sports schools, which gives them the opportunity to train while serving their military service.
Military service should begin on April 11, 2022, the day after the end of the NBA regular season. The shortest military service for athletes lasts 165 days. It is still unclear how Markkanen will end his commitment to the state and whether he will serve his military service at all.
The Finnish basketball player is one of the leaders of the Cleveland Cavaliers this season, where he records 14.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 32 minutes on the floor.
