FIBA recently hosted a delegation from the British Basketball Federation (BBF) at their headquarters in Munich, reinforcing the strong partnership between the two organizations.
The British delegation, led by Chris Grant, Chair of British Basketball, included BBF Consultant Technical Lead Kieron Achara and Great Britain star player Temi Fagbenle. They engaged in productive discussions with FIBA Europe President Jorge Garbajosa and FIBA Executive Director Europe Kamil Novak on various key topics shaping the future of basketball in Great Britain and beyond.
Among the critical points of discussion were the national federations’ funding process, the strategic outlook for 3×3 basketball, and Great Britain’s potential role as a host for future international tournaments and FIBA events. The BBF has already showcased its hosting capabilities through successful events such as the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2004 Division B tournament in Brighton and the 2015 European Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Worcester. Additionally, cities such as London, Manchester, and Newcastle have been consistent hosts for Great Britain’s home games in recent EuroBasket and World Cup Qualifiers.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to explore potential adjustments to the international competition calendar, proposed changes to European club competitions, and initiatives aimed at fostering youth basketball development.
FIBA Europe reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating closely with all National Federations and emphasized that their partnership with the BBF will continue to strengthen throughout 2025 and beyond. The ongoing dialogue between the two organizations aims to support the growth and development of basketball in Great Britain while ensuring alignment with FIBA’s strategic vision.
This meeting marks another milestone in the cooperative efforts to elevate British basketball on the European and global stage, with both parties eager to build upon their shared goals and achievements.
