Kenyan runner Beatrice Chebet has won the 10,000 metre race at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. She adds this world title to her Olympic gold medal from last year and now hopes to win both the 5,000m and 10,000m events.
Chebet made her move on the final lap and crossed the line in 30 minutes and 37.61 seconds to claim her first world title.
Nadia Battocletti from Italy finished second in 30:38.23, setting a new Italian national record. It’s her second silver medal after also coming second to Chebet at the Paris Olympics.
Gudaf Tsegay from Ethiopia came third in 30:39.65, her best time of the year. She just managed to hold off Chebet’s teammate, Agnes Jebet Ngetich.
Tsegay had previously won gold at the 2023 World Championships, when Ethiopia claimed all three podium places.
