World Record swimmer Neil Agius begins Day 2 of Seven marathons in Seven days around Malta’s island of Gozo

Day 2 Update

Gozo, Malta, Monday 1 September 2025: At 4:30 a.m., before first light, Neil Agius woke feeling the weight of the week ahead. “I am not sure it was the brightest idea to make this seven days long. I think the lack of sleep will be the hardest test,” he said with a soft smile and the quiet determination his crew knows well. This is not a complaint. It is a real moment shared with his community and team. Like anyone facing a long day, motivation is not always there when you first open your eyes. The hardest part is showing up.

By design, The Gozo 7 mirrors everyday life. Some days feel easier. Others demand everything. Today’s swim stands for those mornings when every thought looks for a shortcut and you choose to keep your promise instead. A few deep breaths, food, the first strokes in the water. Then the body follows the plan.

Neil left Hondoq ir-Rummien in Gozo at 6am and is planning to finish at Mgarr ix-Xini at approximately 9pm after swimming over 42km.

Neil still had a tough day. The currents were against him. His crew pulled together to lift his spirits and help him stay focused.

The Gozo 7: 7 Days, 7 Swims, 1 Ocean Mindset

Neil swims for approximately 15 hours a day, deliberately mirroring the length of a typical day. Each start and finish symbolises the arc of daily life. The mission is to turn this extreme test into a guide for everyday living, showing how breathwork, movement and community can carry us through our hardest days.

Designed to Fail

This is not a world record attempt. Neil has stepped away from the unrepeatable to focus on something more relatable. Seven marathons in seven days at sea may sound extreme, but the goal is not to be superhuman. It is to be more human. Know yourself, recognise limits and learn how to grow stronger each day.

The Ocean Mindset

“The Ocean Mindset is not about pushing beyond your limits. It is about knowing yourself and finding ways to thrive through breathwork, movement and the power of community,” says Neil Agius. “I am swimming around Gozo every day for seven days to understand how we can recover, reset and show up again the next day. It is not about the distance. It is a live experiment in resilience.”

Over the last eight years, Neil has built a toolkit that underpins The Gozo 7:
 • Breathwork: calm the mind, build resilience and find focus under pressure.
 • Movement: connect to the body’s strength, flow and ability to adapt.
 • Community: surround yourself with people who support and motivate you.

Why Gozo

Since finishing his world record swim in Xlendi Bay in 2021, Neil has felt a deep connection to Gozo. The Gozo 7 celebrates the island’s heritage and coastline, telling its story through the sea while honouring Malta’s identity as a nation shaped by water. Across the week, Neil will set off from seven iconic spots around the island. Tune in to his WhatsApp community channels for daily start and finish locations.

Backed by Science

Data from Day 1 set the baseline for the 294 km week ahead. WHOOP biometrics guide pacing and recovery. A dedicated science team is running daily tests to track how Neil’s body and mind respond to sustained stress and limited sleep. Assessments monitor physical exhaustion, cognitive function and emotional wellbeing, while examining how breathwork, movement, nutrition and recovery influence focus, fitness and resilience. This is a live experiment designed to reveal simple, accessible tools anyone can use to navigate life’s toughest days.
