Today the Malta women’s national team will host Cyprus in a decisive Group C2 match of the UEFA Women’s Nations League. The fixture will take place at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali.
Malta currently leads the group with 9 points from 4 matches, following three wins and one loss—the latter coming against Cyprus. Cyprus sits just behind in second place with 7 points, having recorded two wins, one draw, and one defeat. As such, this upcoming clash could prove crucial in determining which team finishes top of the group and secures promotion to League B of the UEFA Women’s Nations League—an achievement Malta accomplished two years ago.
In their previous encounter on February 21 in Larnaca, Cyprus edged out Malta with a 2-1 victory. Antri Violari and Marilia Constantinou scored for Cyprus in the first half, while Malta pulled one back in the second half through an own goal by Sara Papadopoulou.
Malta will rely on key players such as rising star Haley Bugeja—renowned for her speed and technical ability—and experienced midfielder Rachel Cuschieri, who has over 100 international caps and currently plays for Genoa in Italy. Their contributions will be vital if Malta is to claim a win on home soil.
Cyprus’s main attacking threat remains Antri Violari, whose performance in the previous match was instrumental. Maltese coach Manuela Tesse will be keen to neutralize her impact and prevent her from creating danger in front of goal.
Cyprus is led by coach Aggelos Tsolakis, who places strong emphasis on technical and tactical development and has shown great confidence in his younger players.
The match is expected to be a high-intensity, emotionally charged contest, with Malta determined to exact a measure of sporting revenge and retain top spot in the group.
Following this game, Malta will travel to Andorra for their final Group C2 match, scheduled for Tuesday, June 3.
This match at the National Stadium in Ta’ Qali has been welcomed by many, as the Malta Football Association provides the women’s team an opportunity to showcase their talents at the country’s premier venue. Additionally, the team will debut their newly unveiled kit. Kick-off is set for 7 PM.
