2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup – European Qualifying – Group B2
TÜRKIYE…3
MALTA…….0
Malta opened their Group B2 European Qualifying campaign with a 3-0 defeat away to a strong Turkish side on Tuesday afternoon. While the hosts controlled large spells of the match, Malta showed resilience and moments of attacking intent, particularly after the break.

The game started with difficulty for the visitors, with Türkiye posing an immediate threat from set pieces. The breakthrough came in the seventh minute when a corner into the area saw Lexine Farrugia inadvertently turn the ball into her own net.
Türkiye almost doubled their lead in 17 minutes following a free kick that confused the penalty area, but Malta’s defence managed to clear the danger.

The second goal arrived in 29 minutes after the hosts capitalised on a turnover in defence. Ebru Topçu struck powerfully from distance, giving Giulia D’Antuono little chance as Türkiye extended their advantage before half-time.

Malta emerged stronger in the second half. In 50 minutes, Maria Farrugia tested Selda Akgöz following good build-up play, although the flag was raised for offside. In the 67th minute, Farrugia again came close after being set up by Haley Bugeja, her effort narrowly clearing the crossbar.

Türkiye continued to threaten on the counter, with D’Antuono producing a solid save from Selen Altunkulak’s volley. Malta defended well for long periods, but in the 88th minute, Arzu Karabulut found space in the area to slot home and seal the 3-0 result.
Malta will look to respond on Saturday evening when they host Switzerland at the Centenary Stadium, with kick-off at 19:00hrs.
