Sampdoria have been handed a final opportunity to retain their place in Serie B and avoid a dramatic fall into the third tier. The Blucerchiati finished the regular season in 18th place, suffering a bitter relegation on the field.
However, the situation changed with the Brescia case, which reshaped the Serie B standings. The FIGC (Italian Football Federation) handed the Lombardy-based club a four-point deduction — a heavy blow that currently sees them relegated to Serie C. Brescia are expected to appeal the decision in the coming days.
Back on the pitch, the relegation play-out will now be contested between Salernitana and Sampdoria, while Frosinone has secured its place in Serie B. This gives Sampdoria a second chance, with a two-legged tie against Salernitana set to be played between June 15 and 20.
The situation may still evolve depending on the outcome of Brescia’s appeal, but as it stands, Sampdoria could yet salvage their season by avoiding relegation through the play-out. Salernitana, for their part, will be equally determined to survive and avoid a second straight relegation, following their recent drop from Serie A.
