Italy’s Under-21 European Championship campaign ended in the quarter-finals as they fell 3-2 to Germany after extra time in a gripping encounter. The match remained scoreless in the first half, with Italy’s defence and goalkeeper Alessio Desplanches holding firm against Germany’s early pressure.
The Azzurrini took the lead in the 58th minute through a swift counterattack finished by Koleosho, only for Germany’s Woltemade to equalise ten minutes later. The match took a dramatic turn in the 80th minute when Italy’s Wilfried Gnonto was shown a second yellow card, reducing the team to ten men. Germany capitalised seven minutes later as Weiper scored to complete the turnaround.
Shortly before full time, Italy’s Zanotti was also sent off for dissent, leaving the team with nine players. Despite the disadvantage, Ambrosino struck a brilliant free-kick in stoppage time to level the score and force extra time. However, Germany’s Rohl scored a decisive goal in the 117th minute to secure Germany’s progression to the semi-finals, where they will face France.
In the other quarter-final, France overcame Denmark 3-2 in a closely contested match. Denmark twice took the lead through goals from Bischoff and Sorensen, while France responded with strikes from Cissé, Merlin, and a late winner from Mathys Tel. France’s comeback in the final minutes ensured their place in the semi-finals against Germany, ending Denmark’s valiant run in the tournament.
