England’s Under-21 squad claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory against Germany in the final of the U21 European Championship at Stadion Tehelne Pole on Saturday night.
The match got off to a fast start as Harvey Elliott put England ahead within five minutes, finishing from a rebound off Germany’s goalkeeper Noah Atubolu. England extended their lead in the 24th minute when James McAtee assisted Omari Hutchinson, who skillfully tucked the ball past Atubolu.
Germany responded just before the break with Nelson Weiper heading in a cross from Paul Nebel. England were forced to make an early substitution after midfielder Alex Scott sustained an injury during the first half.
In the second half, England pushed for a third goal but failed to capitalize on several chances. Germany, however, leveled the score shortly after the hour mark with a curling effort from Nebel.
With the scores tied after regular time, the contest proceeded into extra time. England made two substitutions, bringing on Jonathan Rowe and Ethan Nwaneri. Rowe proved decisive by scoring the winning goal in the 92nd minute, heading in a cross delivered by Tyler Morton.
This victory marks England’s successful defense of the U21 European Championship title, their second time retaining the trophy following previous back-to-back wins in 1982 and 1984.
