Marketa Vondrousova secured her first title since her Wimbledon triumph two years earlier, after defeating Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu in the Berlin Open final. The 25-year-old Czech, who had been dealing with injury setbacks over the past year, managed to put those struggles behind her with a 7-6 (12-10), 4-6, 6-2 victory.
She had managed to save six set points in a tightly contested opening-set tie-break, which gave her the momentum to claim the first set. Wang, aged 23, had made headlines by eliminating four top-20 players on her way to what was her first-ever final on the tour. She showed strong determination by breaking serve in the second set to level the match.
However, it was Vondrousova who took control in the decisive third set, breaking twice to secure the win and earn the third WTA title of her career. Her performance was seen as a timely confidence boost ahead of Wimbledon.
After the match, Vondrousova said it had been a pleasure to play in front of a full crowd and that she had really enjoyed the tennis and the support throughout the week.
In the doubles event, British doubles number one Olivia Nicholls, partnering with Slovakia’s Tereza Mihalikova, claimed the title. They beat the top-seeded Italian duo Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, coming from a set down to win 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
