Jannik Sinner reached the semi-finals of the ATP Finals in Turin on Wednesday after defeating Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-3. The world number one has now won five matches in a row against the German and goes through from the Bjorn Borg group with one match still to play.
Sinner, who is aiming to defend his title at the season-ending tournament, wasn’t at his best early on and appeared to have a slight hand problem. Even so, he was strong enough to get past Zverev in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
“I’ve known Sasha for a long time, and we changed our tactics a bit today,” Sinner said after the match. “I only needed one break in each set, so I’m really happy. Let’s see how the next one goes.”
Sinner has been in great form recently and says he feels confident heading into the rest of the tournament.
Zverev, who hasn’t beaten Sinner since the 2023 US Open, needed a straight-sets win to reach the semi-finals. Instead, he’ll now have to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in his final group match on Friday to stay in the competition.
The German looked frustrated throughout, missing all seven of his break points and making several unforced forehand errors.
Sinner, meanwhile, served superbly with 12 aces and took control once he broke Zverev’s serve late in the first set. He’ll face Ben Shelton next as he looks to top the group and set up a semi-final clash with whoever finishes second in the Jimmy Connors group, currently led by Carlos Alcaraz.
