Jannik Sinner, the world number one, has won his first Wimbledon title by beating defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in four sets.
The Italian player stopped the Spanish star, who was aiming to win his third Wimbledon final in a row. The match was watched by a crowd that included the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, George and Charlotte.
Sinner, 23, had lost to Alcaraz just 35 days earlier in an epic French Open final, but this time he came out on top. Many tennis fans see these two players as having a big rivalry that could last for years.
During the match, there was a tense moment when Sinner had to pause his serve because a champagne cork nearly hit him. This caused some boos from the crowd and a warning from the umpire.
After winning, Sinner said: “I had a tough loss in Paris, but it doesn’t matter how you win or lose. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes and work on them. I’m very happy to have kept calm and to be holding this trophy. It’s an amazing feeling.”
Alcaraz, who lost the final, congratulated Sinner and said he was proud of how he had played during the two weeks in London. He also spoke about struggling earlier in the season but now enjoying his tennis again.
The final was watched by other famous guests too, like Keira Knightley, Matthew McConaughey, and Nicole Kidman.
In the match, Alcaraz started strong, hitting very fast serves, including a new personal record at 140 mph. He won the first set 6-4, but Sinner fought back to win the next three sets by the same score, 6-4.
The win took just over three hours and ended a run of five losses Sinner had against Alcaraz. It is also Sinner’s first Grand Slam title on grass courts, as he usually prefers hard courts.
This victory tightens the exciting rivalry between these two young stars, with Sinner now having four Grand Slam titles and Alcaraz five.
