Jannik Sinner powers to China Open title with dominant win over Learner Tien

Jannik Sinner produced a commanding display to defeat American 19-year-old Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in the China Open final, claiming his 3rd title of the season and the 21st tour level trophy of his career.

The world number two looked back to his best in Beijing as he dismantled Tien, who was playing in his first ATP Tour final. Sinner’s victory came just a day after world number one Carlos Alcaraz lifted the Japan Open title, marking the first time since 2020 that the top two men’s players both won tournaments in the same week. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal were the last to achieve the feat, in Dubai and Acapulco respectively.

“It is a very, very special place for me,” Sinner said during the trophy presentation. “My team, thank you for understanding and working with me. Not all the team is here, hopefully the rest are watching from home. We will try to improve and push for more and see what the rest of the season looks like. But I am very happy to share this trophy with all of you.”

The four time Grand Slam champion had struggled with illness during his semi final victory over Alex de Minaur on Tuesday, battling stomach problems that left him visibly drained. But there were no signs of discomfort in the final. Sinner broke Tien’s serve in the opening game and never looked back, taking the first set with a composed hold.

Tien, who was bidding to become the youngest American to win an ATP Tour title since Andy Roddick in 2002, did create opportunities in the second set. He earned two break points but Sinner held firm, moving into a 4-2 lead before closing out the match on his third championship point.

With the win, Sinner became only the second man after Djokovic to secure multiple titles at the ATP 500 event in Beijing. Djokovic won the tournament six times between 2009 and 2015.

Addressing his opponent after the match, Sinner praised Tien’s breakthrough performance. “You have shown throughout the whole season what a talent you are,” he said. “Keep going. You are playing incredible tennis. I wish you all the best for the rest of the season and for your whole career. Hopefully we can share more moments like this in the future.”

Sinner will now turn his attention to the Shanghai Masters, which begins this week. Alcaraz, meanwhile, is expected to miss the tournament as he continues his recovery from injury.
