British tennis player Oliver Tarvet had a dream start at Wimbledon, winning his debut match in straight sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-4) against Switzerland’s Leandro Riedi. The 21-year-old, who came through three rounds of qualifying, impressed fans on Court Four with a confident and stylish performance.
Tarvet could now face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the next round, a big opportunity for the student from the University of San Diego. However, due to his amateur status, Tarvet won’t receive the full £99,000 prize money for second-round players. Instead, he’ll be limited to $10,000 plus expenses.
Currently ranked world number 719, Tarvet is expected to turn professional after finishing his studies. He was the only British player to qualify for the main draw, joining 22 others who received wildcard entries.
