Malta Knights Name 19-Man Squad for Today’s European Rugby League Championship Opener Against Netherlands
The Malta Rugby League (MRL) has officially confirmed its 19-man squad for today’s much-anticipated European Championship Group B opener against the Netherlands at Marsa Rugby Ground.
With gates opening at 12:30pm and kick-off set for 1:30pm, the stage is set for a landmark occasion in Maltese rugby league as this fixture marks Malta’s return to official European competition for the first time since 2021.
The Maltese Knights are currently ranked 13th in the world as the team prepare to meet a Dutch side that sits 9th in the International Rugby League world rankings. Notably, the two nations did not cross paths during the last European Championship, adding intrigue to today’s encounter.
Head Coach Philip Humphrey admitted this year’s selection process was his most challenging to date, reflecting the progress and depth within the squad.“All the boys have shown real improvement, and now the hard work begins to deliver a performance worthy of Malta today,” Humphrey commented.
The squad blends seasoned internationals with emerging talent. Captain Karl Cassar and stalwart Kaine Dimech bring a decade of experience, while Zarrin Galea, recently named joint League One Player of the Year in England, is set to be a fan favourite. The largest contingent of Malta-based players comes from Falcons RFC and Stompers RFC, with at least ten homegrown athletes expected to feature today.
Team manager Anthony Micallef emphasised the squad’s commitment:“We expect every opponent to bring their best, and we intend to match that intensity. Everyone involved—from players to staff and sponsors—is excited for what today represents for Maltese rugby league.”
Dutch Arrive After Tough Run
The Netherlands arrive in Malta after two home defeats, most recently against a strong Ukraine side featuring NRL talent. Despite these setbacks, the Dutch remain one of the most consistent teams in recent years and will provide a stern test for the Knights.
With forecasts looking positive after a week of unsettled weather, today promises to be a fantastic day out for rugby league fans. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own deckchairs, with refreshments available on site.
Veteran skipper Karl Cassar summed up the mood: “Representing Malta at home is an honour like no other. The effort behind the scenes has been immense, and we’re determined to make the nation proud. We know the Dutch will be well-prepared, but our preparation has been excellent and the team spirit is strong. We’re ready to honour the kit and deliver for Malta.”European Rugby League Championship Group B
