The Maltese football community is mourning the loss of Louis Pace, the distinguished former Valletta and Malta international defender, who has passed away at the age of 77.
Louis Pace was widely recognised as one of Malta’s leading defenders during the 1970s, earning five caps for the national team. His international debut came in the historic 1971 fixture when Malta faced England for the first time in London. On that memorable day, 12th May 1971, Malta competed in a European Championship qualifier at Wembley, ultimately succumbing 5-0 to the hosts.
Pace went on to represent Malta twice more against Hungary, and once each against Greece and Austria, further cementing his reputation as a dedicated and reliable presence at the back.
At club level, Pace enjoyed a celebrated career with Valletta FC. He made his senior debut for the club at just 18 years of age, featuring in a January 1966 match against Hibernians. Throughout his time with Valletta, he made 88 appearances and found the net once, playing a pivotal role in the club’s success including helping Valletta secure the league title in the 1973/74 season.
Louis Pace will be fondly remembered by teammates, supporters, and the wider football community for his commitment, professionalism, and contributions to Maltese football both domestically and on the international stage.
