In almost 40-degree heat at Charles Abela Stadium in Mosta, Malta XIII scored 12 tries to defeat the visiting University of Exeter Rugby League team 60, 14.
Prop Kaine Dimech led the way with three tries, while Jean Scholey and Josh Gatt scored two each, helping bring a successful end to the national team’s week-long training camp in Malta.
After the match, Dimech said, “This camp was a big success. A lot of new players stepped up and gave us a solid base to score some great tries. It’s clear our local players are getting stronger, and we’re relying less on overseas players to create chances.”
He added, “The talent is really building in Malta Rugby League. There’s a strong bond growing in the team. Hopefully, this week’s training will help grow the number of local players ready to put their hands up for the European Championship games later this year.”

Dimech not only scored three tries but also set up a couple more. One of the highlights was a beautiful team try just before half time, where the ball moved from the right wing all the way to the left for Jean Scholey to score.
There were other special moments too, Kane Tippett scored on his debut after collecting a cross-field kick from Jarrod Sammut, and vice-captain Jean-Pierre Zarb touched down just a day after the passing of his father.
Exeter started strong and led 8, 6 after 15 minutes, but Malta soon took control in the intense heat.
Exeter captain Ben Mirchandani, who scored two tries, said, “It was a tough game in the heat, but the lads gave it everything. There were some really promising moments. Congrats to Malta for their strong and skilful performance, they deserved the win. Thanks also for the hospitality at dinner later.”
With 11 starting players from Malta and four new Maltese representatives making their debut, Malta Rugby League officials called the match a huge success.

Malta will play again on 18 October at home to the Netherlands and then away to Serbia on 1 November.
