It is nothing short of disheartening that, 35 days after the 2025 Victory Day Regatta, Malta’s traditional rowing athletes are still waiting for the official presentation of their hard-earned trophies, medals and shields. The Regatta is not simply a sporting event; it is a living testament to Maltese heritage, resilience, and community spirit. A tradition that has survived centuries, wars, and storms.
Yet, in the 2025 edition, it seems to have been brought to a standstill not by the elements, but by bureaucratic indifference?
Despite repeated requests from Regatta Malta to Sport Malta’s leadership for a timely and dignified presentation, following the poor condition and preparations, Regatta Malta said it first opted to hold the ceremony on the16th of September. No response meant that Regatta Malta wrote to SportMalta again for the now postponed 26th.
“There has been nothing but silence” Regatta Malta posted to their socials.
The lack of response is not only disrespectful to the clubs and athletes who dedicate months to training, dieting and competition, but it undermines the very values that SportMalta embodies: recognition, unity, and fair play.

Let us be clear: these athletes braved not only the challenging waters of the Grand Harbour that September 8th, but also the unpredictability of wind and the ever-present demands of pre-preparation. To leave their achievements unrecognised, their efforts uncelebrated, is to diminish the meaning of sport in Malta. It sends a message that traditional disciplines are somehow less worthy of respect than others. A sentiment echoed in Regatta Malta’s own frustrated social media statement.
