After their recent successes where they were losing finalists at the Grand Prix of Mallorca and winners at the Grand Prix of Vienna, Bormla continued on their path of success by reaching the semifinals of the `Major` Tournament in Bologna, in what is considered as the highest level of team competition organized by the World Federation FISTF.
Representing Malta in this event was also Valletta Subbuteo Club, considered amongst the favourites for the final victory. They made it to the Quarterfinals but were eliminated by Rieti of Italy. In the semifinals, the same Rieti also eliminated Bormla, to reach the finals where they were defeated by Napoli Eagles on goal difference. Both Bormla and Valletta topped their respective groups with maximum points.
Valletta was composed of Samwel Bartolo, Mark Gauci, Jurgen Balzan, Derek Conti, Joseph Borg Bonaci, Massimiliano Nastasi, and Pascal Scheen, while Bormla had Charles Aquilina, George Ebejer, Jason Pisani, John Zammit, Bessim Golger, and Thomas Ebejer.
Other Maltese players who participated in this competition were Patrick Pace and Jamie Bonnici, players of Italian Serie A Club Lazio TFC, who also reached the Quarterfinals, as well as Isaac Camilleri and Emanuel Camilleri of the English Hobby Subbuteo Club.
In the individual competitions, in the top category “Open”, Malta’s champion Samwel Bartolo reached the quarterfinals where he was defeated by Portuguese Loureiro on penalties. Other Maltese players like Jean Carl Tabone, George Ebejer, and Mark Gauci made it to the last 32 of this “Open” competition.
In the Veterans category, Jason Pisani reached the last 16 while Charles Aquilina made it to the semifinals where he was defeated by Italian Belloni, the winner of this “Veterans” tournament.
Bormla Subbuteo continue their success in Bologna
