Young talent shines at the Malta Open Championships

The Malta Weightlifting Association recently hosted the highly anticipated Malta Open Championships, drawing athletes across all age groups—from promising young lifters to seasoned competitors. The event showcased a strong turnout, with youth athletes standing out as the rising stars of Malta’s weightlifting scene.

In the men’s seniors and juniors categories, Rylee Borg delivered an exceptional performance, lifting a total of 277kg and scoring 338 points to secure championship titles in both divisions. His consistent technique and form distinguished him throughout the competition. Vlad Baldacchino closely followed, lifting a slightly higher total of 282kg but scoring 321 points, underscoring how bodyweight factors into the scoring system. Luke Treeby Ward completed the podium with a solid performance, earning third place.

In the women’s division, Tenishia Thornton once again asserted her dominance by capturing both Senior and Junior titles with a combined lift of 176kg and 230 points. Kim Camilleri Lagana impressed with a 155kg total and 228 points, securing second place overall and also taking gold in the U17 category. Aaliyah Gatt closely followed in this age group, registering an impressive 161kg total and 208 points, while Kaya Curmi Inguanez put in a strong effort to finish fourth with 200 points.

The championships also highlighted emerging talent in the youth categories. In the U11 Girls division, Mia Sant claimed victory with a total lift of 61kg and 106 points. She was followed by Cayenne Mizzi, who scored 75 points, and Zeyah Vassallo, with 69 points—both showing promising potential at a young age

In the Boys U15 category, Nathan Balzan stood out with the best result, scoring 202 points. He was narrowly challenged by Gabriel Frendo, who finished just behind with 200 points in one of the day’s closest contests.
