The Malta Weightlifting Association reported outstanding performances at the London Open, held at Crystal Palace, with several Maltese athletes achieving podium finishes and setting new national records.
In the opening event, Kim Camilleri Lagana and Aaliyah Gatt impressed the judges and spectators alike. Camilleri Lagana claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 159 kilograms, while Gatt secured the bronze medal with a total of 155 kilograms.
In the following competition, Nathaniel Fenech added to Malta’s medal tally, winning bronze with a total lift of 216 kilograms. Luke Stefan Micallef delivered an exceptional performance, completing all six lifts successfully to claim the gold medal with a total of 207 kilograms. Micallef also set new Maltese national records in the 65 kilogram category, achieving 118 kilograms in the Clean and Jerk and establishing a new total record.
In the final competition, the youngest member of the Maltese team, Nathan Mifsud, demonstrated remarkable composure and strength. Completing all six lifts, he secured the gold medal with a total of 201 kilograms.
Unfortunately, Rylee Borg and Tenishia Thornton were unable to compete as they continue their recovery from injury.
