Maltese athletes set national records at European Open Classic Powerlifting Championships

From 15 to 22 March, Malta hosted the European Open Classic Powerlifting Championships, welcoming 274 athletes from 35 nations for one of the biggest events on the local powerlifting calendar.

The competition, organised by Mauro Gasan, was held at the InterContinental Hotel in St Julian’s and brought together some of Europe’s top competitors in the sport.

Under the guidance of lead coach Joseph Abela, a Maltese team of nine athletes competed across seven weight categories against elite continental opposition. The local contingent produced a highly encouraging performance, breaking seven Open National Records, four Junior National Records and 12 personal records.

Malta also registered an important achievement off the platform, with three Maltese officials, Ilaria Spiteri Axiak, Simon Brincat and Maja Vaha, successfully passing their Category 2 international referee examinations.

Their success marks a significant step forward for officiating standards in Malta and reflects continued investment in the development of qualified referees, while also strengthening the country’s standing within the international powerlifting community.

Powerlifting consists of three disciplines: squat, bench press and deadlift, with athletes ranked according to the highest combined total recorded in their respective weight category.

The Malta Powerlifting Association congratulated the full Maltese delegation for their hard work, dedication and sacrifice throughout the championship.

Attention will now turn to the association’s upcoming competitions, with the Spring Nationals set to be held on 16 May, followed by Iron Island on 26 and 27 September.
