The European Small Nations Championship and the Malta International Open 2025 will take place on the 22nd and 23rd of March at the newly built Weightlifting Training and Competition Centre in the Marsa Sport Complex. This event will bring together top weightlifters from 15 countries, giving them the opportunity to showcase their strength and skill on an international stage. The public is encouraged to attend and support Malta’s athletes as they compete at home.
The competition begins on the 22nd of March with a full day of weightlifting starting at 9:30. Men’s and women’s sessions will take place across different weight categories, promising an exciting weekend of high-level competition. The Opening Ceremony will be held at 14:00, celebrating 50 years of Malta Weightlifting and highlighting the importance of this championship for both local and international weightlifting.
Among the first Maltese athletes to compete will be European Union Silver medallist Nathan Mifsud, representing Team Malta at 11:30. Later, European Junior Bronze medallist Kim Camilleri Lagana will take to the platform at 15:00. The action continues on the 23rd of March with more exciting matchups, featuring some of Malta’s top weightlifters. European Junior Champion Tenishia Thornton will compete at 11:30 alongside Roberta Tabone. Later, at 14:00, Rylee Borg, one of Malta’s most promising male athletes, will aim to prove himself on the national and international stage. He will be joined by Vlad Baldacchino as they take on strong competitors from abroad.
This championship is a significant moment for Maltese weightlifting as it will be held in the newly constructed Weightlifting Training and Competition Hall in the Marsa Sport Complex. The Malta Weightlifting Association has expressed its gratitude to SportMalta for its support in building this modern facility, which will play an important role in the development of the sport.
With over 125 participants, the European Small Nations Championship and Malta International Open 2025 will be a must-see event for sports fans. Malta will compete against Iceland, Cyprus, San Marino, Luxembourg, Monaco, and the Faroe Islands in the Small Nations category, while the International Open will feature Maltese athletes competing against lifters from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Romania, Denmark, Germany, and Belgium.
The event will also welcome key figures in the weightlifting world, including the President and General Secretary of the International Weightlifting Federation, the President and General Secretary of the European Weightlifting Federation, and several national federation presidents from across Europe.
