Chess set donations to schools in Malta and Gozo

The Malta Chess Federation, in partnership with APS Bank and the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is excited to announce the continuation of its initiative to donate chess sets to schools throughout Malta and Gozo. This effort is part of the Federation’s commitment to promoting chess among young students and encouraging intellectual growth through strategic thinking.

Recently, chess sets and clocks were provided to 15 schools in Malta and 11 schools in Gozo, including St. Aloysius College, Junior College, Sacred Heart, Archbishop Seminary, and Rabat Middle School in Malta, as well as Qala, Żebbuġ, Xewkija, and Għajnsielem Primary Schools in Gozo. Several of these schools have also received support in establishing dedicated chess clubs to foster students’ interest in the game.

Beyond supplying chess equipment, the Malta Chess Federation has organized weekly chess lessons in some schools, ensuring that students benefit from professional instruction and have the chance to enhance their skills. This initiative is anticipated to significantly enrich the extracurricular activities available to students and aid in their cognitive development.

The support from APS Bank and FIDE has been crucial in bringing this project to fruition, underscoring the value of chess as an educational tool. The Malta Chess Federation remains dedicated to showcasing the benefits of chess to students across the Maltese Islands.

The most recent donations took place last April during the Interschools Tournament at St. Nicholas College, Dingli Secondary School, which saw participation from over 150 boys and girls. Mr. Jeremy Vassallo from APS Bank and Malta Chess Federation President Duncan Vella presented the chess sets and clocks to De La Salle College, St. Theresa College Mrieħel Secondary, St. Michael School, National Sport School, Żejtun Middle & Secondary School, Malta Visual & Performing Arts School, and St. Albert College.

The Malta Chess Federation plans to continue its donations in October when schools reopen for the new academic year.
