The Hibernians Girls Under 16 Basketball team and karate athlete Jenna Awad Attia have been named the winners of the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award for December in the Local and International categories, respectively.
In the Local category, the award was presented to the Hibernians Girls Under 16 Basketball team following an outstanding performance in the Memorial Cup. The Paolites produced a dominant display in the final, defeating Luxol 94–47 in the decider played on 8 December. Their commanding victory underlined the team’s continued development and growing stature within Maltese youth basketball.
Meanwhile, karate athlete Jenna Awad Attia claimed the International category award after an exceptional showing at the WKF K1 Youth League held in Jesolo, Italy. The 14-year-old secured a bronze medal in the highly competitive kata category, becoming the first Maltese athlete to ever finish on the podium at a Youth League event in this discipline.
Awad Attia competed against a strong field of 96 athletes representing 33 countries, including Spain, Germany, the United States, Mexico, France, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Sweden and India, marking a historic milestone for Maltese karate on the international stage.
The Atlas Youth Athletes of the Month Award was presented by Atlas Insurance Chief Commercial Officer Robert Micallef, while the Malta Sports Journalists Association was represented by General Secretary Joanna Camilleri.
The award is a joint initiative between the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Atlas Insurance. Each month, an adjudicating panel evaluates youth sporting achievements and invites nominations from local sports associations and federations for athletes under the age of 21 who have distinguished themselves. Monthly winners are automatically shortlisted for the annual award.
