Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of former midfielder Michael Carrick as interim manager for the remainder of the season.
Carrick steps into the role following the departure of Ruben Amorim and takes over first-team responsibilities from Darren Fletcher, who had been placed in temporary charge during the transition period.
United’s hierarchy, led by chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox, interviewed both Carrick and former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the interim position. Despite Solskjaer’s popularity at Old Trafford, the club opted for Carrick after being impressed by his vision and plans for the squad.
Speaking following his appointment, Carrick described the role as a major honour.
“Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour. I know what it takes to succeed here, and my focus is on helping the players reach the standards expected at this incredible club,” Carrick said.
“I have worked with a number of the players already and have continued to watch the team closely in recent years. I have total belief in their talent, dedication and ability to be successful here.
“There is still a lot to fight for this season. We are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances their loyal support deserves.”
Carrick enjoyed a highly successful playing career at Manchester United, making 464 appearances and winning five Premier League titles. He previously served as caretaker manager for three matches following Solskjaer’s dismissal in November 2021, before stepping aside for the arrival of Ralf Rangnick.
After leaving Old Trafford, Carrick took charge of Middlesbrough in October 2022, guiding the club to the Championship play-offs in his first season. However, Middlesbrough failed to repeat that success in the following two campaigns and Carrick was dismissed at the end of the 2024 25 season after 136 games in charge.
United director of football Jason Wilcox expressed confidence in the appointment.
“Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United,” Wilcox said. “He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success.”
Carrick will now be tasked with steadying the side and delivering results as United aim to finish the season strongly under familiar leadership.
