Kai Azzopardi and Jacob Micallef have been named the winners of March’s Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award, in recognition of two standout performances in duathlon and motorsport, respectively.
Azzopardi, who competes in duathlon, earned the honour after an impressive display at the National Sprint Duathlon Championships 2026, where he was crowned men’s national champion. His performance stood out in a competitive field and confirmed his growing status as one of Malta’s most promising young endurance athletes.

The championships delivered a high standard across the board, but Azzopardi’s composed and determined effort saw him rise above the field to secure the national title. His latest result further highlighted both his consistency and his potential.
Micallef, meanwhile, was recognised for a milestone achievement in motorsport after securing his first Formula 4 podium at the Circuito de Jarama during Round 2 of the Spanish Winter Championship.

The young Maltese driver produced a calm and measured performance, finishing sixth on track and second in the Rookie classification. That result was enough to seal his first Formula 4 podium and marked another important step in his development at the international level.

The achievements of both athletes were praised as further evidence of the strength of emerging Maltese sporting talent. Their performances in March placed them among the month’s most notable youth competitors and underlined their potential for further success.
The March award was presented by Robert Micallef, Chief Commercial Officer of Atlas Insurance, while the Malta Sports Journalists Association was represented by its President, Antvin Monseigneur.
The Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award is a joint initiative between the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Atlas Insurance. The adjudicating panel reviews the achievements of young athletes during the month under consideration, while local associations and federations are also invited to submit nominations for athletes under 21 who have distinguished themselves. All monthly winners go on to be considered for the annual award.
