Team Malta wrapped up another successful day at the Games of the Small States of Europe with a strong showing across multiple disciplines, led once again by the outstanding Sophie St. John.
St. John added yet another gold to her name by triumphing in the beam event in gymnastics. She later secured her fifth medal of these Games by earning bronze in the floor routine, capping off a remarkable individual performance.
Fellow gymnast Julia Galea also impressed, claiming silver in the floor exercise with a composed and elegant routine.
In table tennis, both the men’s and women’s singles finals ended with silver medals for Malta. Felix Wetzel narrowly missed out on gold in the men’s final, while Maria-Carmela Iacob matched his result on the women’s side, after strong runs through the earlier rounds.
Meanwhile, in trap shooting, Gianluca Chetcuti captured bronze, finishing behind San Marino’s European champion Alessio Berti and a Cypriot contender in a closely-fought event.
These achievements added to Malta’s growing medal tally, which also included the silver medal in women’s basketball 3×3 after a hard-fought final against Luxembourg, and a silver in the 1500m freestyle by swimmer Sasha Gatt, her second medal of the Games.
Earlier in the day, Luke Galea brought more glory to the Karate contingent by securing a gold medal in the -84kg Kumite category, defeating Luxembourg’s Tiago Serra Rodrigues 4-2 in a tightly contested final.
