Valletta look to extend unbeaten run as they face Gżira in midweek clash

Valletta will aim to strengthen their position among the top two in the YoHealth Malta Premier League when they take on Gżira United on Tuesday evening at the Tony Bezzina Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6.45 pm.

The Citizens enter Matchday 10 as the league’s only unbeaten team, with six wins and three draws from their opening nine matches, sitting second in the standings on 21 points. Their recent form has been formidable, four consecutive victories, including wins over Hibernians, Naxxar Lions, and Tarxien Rainbows.

Coach Thane Micallef’s side have been effective at both ends of the pitch, scoring 15 goals and conceding just a handful. Their attacking spearhead Yuri De Jesus Messias has been in prolific form, netting six goals so far, supported by Thaylor Aldama, who has scored twice and provided crucial assists.

Gżira, under Darren Abdilla, arrive in eighth place with nine points from nine matches. After a slow start to the campaign, the Maroons have picked up form, claiming back-to-back wins against Mosta and Tarxien Rainbows, scoring five goals in those two matches. Their main attacking threat remains Andre Carlos Penha Da Costa, who has found the net four times, while Johan Bonilla has added three goals but will be absent through suspension for this match, alongside Jork Becerra.

Historically, this fixture has produced tight encounters. The last league meeting in March 2024 ended 1-1, while four of the last five clashes have been draws. Valletta, however, hold the psychological edge after defeating Gżira 1-0 in the FA Trophy last season.

Both sides share disciplinary concerns. Valletta have accumulated 20 yellow cards this season, while Gżira have 21, with several key players one booking away from suspension.

The managerial battle also adds intrigue. Micallef and Abdilla have faced each other five times, with Micallef winning three and Abdilla one, while both coaches have previously managed these clubs in their careers.

With Valletta’s unbeaten streak on the line and Gżira’s recent revival, Tuesday’s match promises to be a competitive affair. Victory for Valletta could see them surpass rivals Floriana at the top of the table, while a Gżira upset would inject fresh life into their campaign.
