Title contenders Sliema Wanderers started off with a narrow 2-1 win over Żabbar SP in the second YoHealth Malta Premier match at the National Stadium.
Sliema took the lead after 15 minutes when Mayron scored an own goal with a backwards header. Soon after, Thiago Espindola added a second with a low shot after getting past his marker.
Żabbar pulled one back just before the break, as Haroun Tchauna headed in from a corner after the goalkeeper failed to clear.
In the second half, Żabbar pushed hard for an equaliser. Mario Fontanella hit the bar with a volley, and Tchauna later rounded the goalkeeper but couldn’t finish. Despite the pressure, Sliema held on for the win.
