Marsaxlokk edge past Birkirkara as Soares proves the difference

YoHealth Malta Premier – Closing Round – Matchday3

Birkirkara……0

Marsaxlokk….1

Marsaxlokk maintained their positive momentum in the YoHealth Malta Premier League Closing Round by claiming a narrow victory over Birkirkara, with Ailton Soares once again emerging as the decisive figure.

In a match short on flair but rich in tactical discipline, the Xlukkajri showed greater purpose and organisation, gradually asserting control against a Birkirkara side that struggled to impose themselves, particularly in the final third.

The opening exchanges were cautious, with blustery conditions limiting fluency. Marsaxlokk were the first to signal intent, as Linden glanced a header on target that was safely handled by Grech, who was soon required again to block a speculative effort from Arias.

Birkirkara’s attacking moments were fleeting. Kemar Reid briefly lifted the tempo midway through the first half with a direct run and a shot that flashed just wide, but it proved to be an isolated moment in an otherwise subdued offensive display. Their rhythm was further disrupted when Jan Busuttil was forced off injured before the interval.

As the half drew to a close, Marsaxlokk went close to taking the lead. Linden rattled the crossbar, and moments later Arias squandered a golden opportunity from close range, lifting his effort onto the bar once more. Linden then narrowly missed the target with a low drive, underlining Marsaxlokk’s growing dominance.

The breakthrough arrived just before the hour mark. A defensive lapse from Birkirkara allowed the ball to break kindly inside the area, and Ailton Soares reacted sharply to guide a composed low finish past Grech.

With the advantage secured, Marsaxlokk managed the game intelligently. Soares remained a constant threat, twice going close to extending the lead, only to be denied by Grech on both occasions. Birkirkara, meanwhile, found it difficult to respond, failing to test Calleja Cremona despite enjoying spells of possession.

Marsaxlokk’s composure in the closing stages ensured the points were safely secured, confirming a second successive victory and reinforcing their strong start to the Closing Round.
